2010 Manayunk Arts Festival

By Laura

The weekend of June 26th Main Street, Manayunk was lined with white tents all day Saturday and Sunday. Each tent was occupied by a brilliantly creative artist who filled his or her space with original pieces of art at the 2010 Manayunk Arts Festival.

The heat was intense but the art fantastic. Artists displayed photographs, sculptures, paintings, apparel, and much, much more. There was also plenty of music, dancing, and food up and down Main Street. Despite the heat everyone seemed to have a great day!

Kathleen Plate travelled from Atlanta, GA to show off her creativity at the Manayunk Arts Festival. Her work is something to be marveled. Using colorful glass circles she creates unique home décor, jewelry, and apparel inspired pieces.

One of the coolest sculptures I saw created a little nostalgia in me. Kimber Fiebiger, of Joan of Art, creates Humpty Dumpty sculptures from bronze. The sculptures are all quirky and fun each with its own personality.

Trust me after speaking to more than 2 dozen artists and most of the store owners it was not a great weekend Very few serious artists sold their work and the stores on the street didn’t do much better.
The show needs to be move to late May or Septmeber. It’s way too hot and people are worn out just walking the show. They spend most of their money on cold drinks, pizza, beer and funnel cake! We own an art gallery and did $27.00 over two days, many other stores just closed. It is an event that in reality is geared towards benefitting a select number of restaruants and a handful of merchants on the street
